DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 1 at 1:00pm via Zoom  \n  \nSongs of the Brokenhearted is a beautifully written novel set in Israel during two time periods: in 1950 at a Yemeni immigrant camp and in 1995 during the Oslo Accords. Through a few main characters\, the story of a Yemeni Jewish family unfolds and will keep you immersed and possibly crying until the last line.  \n  \nRead the book and join us for a moderated discussion with the author\, Ayelet Tsabari. \n  \nThere are 20 copies of the book at the Bookshelf on Quebec Street\, ask for itat the counter and say you are part of Maya’s book club to receive a 10% discount. Registration required for Zoom access. \n\n\n\n \nAyelet Tsabari is the author of Songs for the Brokenhearted\, winner of a National Jewish Book Award for fiction\, The Canadian Jewish Literary Award for fiction\, and one of Globe and Mail’s Best Books of 2024. Her memoir\, The Art of Leaving\, was a finalist for the Writer’s Trust Hilary Weston Prize\, winner of the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for memoir\, and an Apple Books and Kirkus Review Best Book of 2019. Her first book\, The Best Place on Earth\, won the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and nominated for The Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. Ayelet teaches creative writing at The University of King’s College MFA and at Guelph MFA in Creative Writing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:What is one Jewish ethic\, idea\, or biblical or Talmudic phrase that holds deep meaning for you? \nJudaism is often described as an ethical tradition grounded in ongoing interpretation and dialogue. Teachings such as “We were once strangers\,” “All are made in the image of God\,” and “Do not harm or steal from others” continue to shape how people understand moral responsibility. Across generations\, scholars and everyday individuals alike have reflected on which teachings resonate most strongly in their lives. \nIn this facilitated discussion\, each participant will be invited to share one meaningful teaching\, where it may come from\, and why it matters to you. Each sharing will be followed by a brief opportunity for group reflection and conversation.  \nAll are invited to this learning discussion including the beginners\, curious Jews\, estranged Jews and the well versed amongst us.

DESCRIPTION:10:30 to 12:00 (Service) \n\n\n\nCantor Cheryl Wunch is Toronto-based and has been leading our Shabbat services once monthly. She provides our congregation with a modern interpretation of rituals and texts through prayer in both Hebrew and English\, as well as her thought-provoking sermons. Our Shabbat service\, which is enjoyed by all ages is musical\, informal\, interactive and engaging. \n\n\n\nAfter 12:00 (lunch) \n\n\n\nOur kiddush lunch following the service is a time to meet as a community in a comfortable setting and enjoy a delicious lunch.
